YA GOTTA REGATTA!

United States Virgin Islands
Although regattas are held throughout the islands, the Virgin Islands and surrounding areas offer some of the most prestigious.
Known as the “Crown Jewel” of Caribbean regattas, the International Rolex Regatta celebrates its 40th year March 22-24. Held on St. Thomas, it is one of the world’s greatest yacht races for spinnakers, IC-24 one-designs, Beach Cats and multihulls. Contact the St. Thomas Yacht Club (340) 775-6320 or visit www.rolexcupregatta.com for more information.
On St. Croix, the St. Croix Yacht Club marks its 21st year with its International Regatta in November. Visit www.stcroixyc.com for more information or contact the St. Croix Yacht Club (340) 773-9531.
British Virgin Islands
Not all regattas are so serious. Smaller regattas can be enjoyed throughout the year, and impromptu friendly races provide frequent fun at many yacht clubs. If you’re looking for something a bit unusual on the boating circuit, Foxy’s Wooden Boat Regatta on Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands, is quite the party for Memorial Day, with single-handed, log boat and handmade model boat racing. On St. John, sailing takes on a bit of humor with the Minimal Regatta for barely-floating vessels made of plywood and duct tape.
The BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, held directly after the Rolex Regatta, is the British Virgin Islands’ claim to fame in the regatta arena. The 3-day regatta includes racing classes, non-spinnaker classes, multihulls, bareboats, cruisers, classics, Lasers, Beachcats, IC-24s, squibs and windsurfers. A 4-day festival provides non-stop parties and live music, plus a few races of its own. For the schedule of events, visit www.bvispringregatta.org.
A concurrent Puerto Rico International Dinghy Regatta for Optimists, Lasers and Snipes is for junior competitors, dinghy sailors, kiteboarders and stand-up paddleboarders, held at the adjacent Punta Candelero. Visit www.regattalink.com/events.
Check the Marine Guide regatta schedule for additional race dates.
